What is Cantonese Opera?

Five people watch a man performing an acrobatic leap.

Cantonese opera is a centuries-old performance tradition combining singing, live orchestra, stylized movement, martial arts choreography, and elaborate hand-embroidered costumes.

Recognized as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, it remains one of the most visually rich and musically complex theatrical forms in the world.

Our Mission

Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Institute preserves, reimagines, and activates Cantonese opera as a living cultural heritage in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Through bilingual productions, educational programs, and public dialogue, we expand access to this art form and build bridges across generations and cultures.

Why it Matters Now

While Cantonese opera is internationally recognized cultural heritage, it remains underrepresented in the United States.

Jing Ying is among the few organizations in Northern California dedicated specifically to presenting this art form for broad public audiences.

By centering accessibility and dialogue, we ensure that this living tradition continues to evolve and resonate within contemporary American culture.

Community Impact

Each year, Jing Ying engages over 800 audience members through major downtown productions and connects hundreds more through intimate salons and workshops.

Our bilingual programming welcomes both heritage-language and English-speaking audiences, expanding cultural access across the Bay Area.
